We’ve Built a World of Smart Devices — But Do We Know What Smart Actually Means?

From refrigerators to thermostats, watches to lights — “smart” is stamped on everything these days. But in the rush to connect and automate, have we paused to define what “smart” should actually deliver?

Just because a device connects to Wi-Fi or responds to a voice command doesn’t automatically make it smart. Real intelligence should come from understanding context, anticipating needs, and reducing friction in everyday life — not adding to it.

Too often, smart devices become more about novelty than necessity. They flood users with notifications, require constant updates, and create security vulnerabilities — all while delivering marginal benefits.

"Smart isn’t about features — it’s about outcomes. True smart technology should fade into the background, quietly making life better."

It’s time we evolve our definition of smart. Let’s focus less on how many features we can pack in and more on how much unnecessary effort we can remove. Only then will our smart devices actually live up to the name.
